Community Need
Many Kauaʻi residents face significant barriers to accessing treatment, behavioral health services, recovery housing, transportation, employment resources, and family support. Kānaka Maoli, underserved communities, and local families are disproportionately impacted by substance use disorders, housing instability, behavioral health challenges, and justice-system involvement. Many individuals cycle through crisis, incarceration, relapse, and system involvement without receiving the coordinated support necessary for long-term recovery and stability. Common barriers include treatment placement delays, difficulty navigating Child Welfare Services and other public systems, barriers to mental health stabilization, limited recovery-focused reentry support, and fragmented coordination among families, providers, and community resources. Because specialized treatment options are limited in Hawaiʻi, many residents must travel off-island to access appropriate levels of care, making transportation, airfare, lodging, and treatment costs significant barriers to recovery.
